Production

Producer. Programmer.

Theatre work is rarely just one job. I produce, design sound and lights, program QLab and DMX, and write tools when the production needs something the rig cannot do. Stage management taught me what every other role actually needs to keep a show moving.

Threshold's first full production, in a found space, on a  budget. I ran the production side from planning through strike and programmed the show in QLab 5, including ten Philips Hue practicals that took cues like real fixtures through a bridge I wrote for the run. I also created a robust SFX system for simulating thunderstorms, transformations, and overall spookiness.

Hue to QLab ArtNet bridge

The problem

The creative team wanted practicals everywhere: street lamps, desk lamps, wall sconces. Philips Hue bulbs are cheap, wireless, and can (with the right programming) flicker like candles. They also cannot hear a cue stack. QLab speaks ArtNet and DMX; Hue speaks a cloud-style API.

What I built

A Python bridge that listens for ArtNet from QLab on UDP 6454 and turns each DMX channel into a Hue V2 API call over HTTPS. Ten fixtures, each on its own channel. Fast cues use Hue's own transition timing so the bridge never floods its rate limit; slow fades step through intermediate DMX values so they look like dimmers, not smart bulbs catching up. The candle flicker stays running underneath every change.

What it enabled

The operator hit GO and the practicals fade, snap, and hold with everything else on the rig. No extra hardware, no console, and the whole thing moves between venues with dynamic IP discovery.
